Dog losing hair at base of tail
I have a male German shepherd. We went through his health, and he is doing fine. He is 9 months old. This happened at 6 months. He has lost about 4 hairs at the base of his tail. Do you think this is normal or should I take him to the vet?
My German shep is a little smaller than yours is and she is 8 months old. I wouldn't worry about it, just take a picture with a new camera and see if they fall off again at all. Also when you are doing a walk she's got to have something around her to pee and pee at, or pee and poop so that they get their exercise.
We just adopted a little shep from a shelter. They lost their hair on their back legs as well, a lot of it was just there. He had a really good life before he came here, so I think he is still healing. We put him on probiotic and he is doing much better now.
This was on both. We were just starting to use them. I was afraid something was really wrong with him. He had a problem with peeing and poop at the same time so we couldn't take him out during a walk. He would have to be taken to the bathroom every time. The doctor checked it out but said it was normal. He started it at 6 months. I noticed at 3 he got bald again. He lost about 6 hairs on his chest at 6 months. He is doing much better now.
Our two girls are very old - 12 &, 11. I have had them since they were puppies. I really can't see them losing hair at such a young age. But I guess I can't expect a young puppy to have a long life - most of our dogs live to be at least 15.
It's also common with some breeds. They use it to gauge an "acceptable" size. The size of the patch varies with how long it was there.
As far as weight, we had two very undernourished dogs before I found out about all that nutrition stuff. They both gained a good chunk of weight on the food. And we kept an eye on their skin to make sure they weren't developing dry spots.
I agree, at this age, it's not something to really worry about unless the hair is completely gone.
Both of my dogs lost hair at about the same age. My first German Shepherd named "Duke" was only 5 years old when I got him at 2.5 months. He lost his hair entirely between 3 and 5 months and then it never grew back. The other one, a 6 year old English Pointer, lost his hair a lot earlier than Duke. It took him 1.5 years to lose all of it and then he was done. He is still my little man and is going strong at 9 years old. My next dog is a 6 year old German Shepherd from a rescue. He had a small bald spot on his shoulder when he was about 4 and he is still balding, but he has a very heavy coat so I don't really think it's anything.
If your puppy seems to be losing hair at a very fast rate then make sure to check the food. I had a dog named Roo that started losing her hair after her food changed over a couple of months. I am not sure what caused it but I switched her food back and she has gained back the hair she lost.
We just got a new puppy and I just found out that she also has hair loss. We are very worried about it, she is about 6 months old.
It looks like she is losing hair in the same spots as her dad but also on her feet and ears. It looks like it is coming from around the face and also looks like he is losing hair on the top of his head.
Is this what it looks like or is it normal for puppy dogs to lose hair?
If it continues to happen I would go ahead and have a vet check her out just to make sure it is something treatable. Even if it is not treatable it might be something to watch for.
I think the best thing to do is watch her hair closely to make sure it is normal. If it doesn't continue to happen then your vet should be able to tell you what is causing it. If it does continue to happen then you can call your vet in and see what is going on.
Does she have any food allergies? That's a pretty nasty side effect for something in her food.
How did she get this hair loss? Just in one spot or do you know how it started?
Do you know what her normal hair color is? If it is really abnormal I would definitely see your vet.
My dog is a 6 month old lab mix and I just noticed some loss of hair in her eyebrows as well. She also has lost hair on her lower back. I haven't really noticed any more hair loss in other places though. She isn't overweight or anything. She also goes to the groomer regularly. I haven't noticed any changes in her skin, but I haven't spent a lot of time with her. I will definitely be taking her to the vet.

I am really sorry to hear that the hair loss is an issue. I would get her checked out at the vet.
I just want to make a note that it isn't always just the eyebrows and the back and I have noticed it as well. I think it has something to do with the fact that she has a black head so there are areas where there are no hairs left (I think)

She used to have black and white colors and I believe that is how I got the hair loss in the first place. She has been more of a taupe color lately.
It is common in larger breeds because they don't sweat as much as smaller dogs so their coat isn't as oily. You should try to see if she has any other symptoms and if not, talk to your vet about it.
